(Drama)
The search for the American dream...
Willy Loman is a salesman. For more than three decades, he has traveled the roads between his home in New York City and the cities and towns of New England, plying a route for the same company more or less successfully. Now, late in his life, Willy’s sales are flagging, and the firm is trying in a not-very-subtle way to push him out the door. Meanwhile, relationships with his two sons, Biff and Happy, are being affected by the fact that they are not as successful as he hoped they would be – although he strives to convince them and himself that they are all doing just fine. Willy’s wife Linda knows better, knows that Willy is really struggling, but she is trying in her own way to convince herself that everything will be fine -- if only Willy would get some rest. Death of Salesman covers all this and more as it explores 24 hours in the salesman’s life, and through a montage of memories, dreams, confrontations and arguments shows us some of the influences that have made Willy Loman the man he is -- a very human, very “everyday” man, a salesman who pursued the “American Dream” and somehow got lost along the way.
